Community colleges are the premier institution for career and technical education (CTE). However, CTE is often criticized as being too narrow in scope and offering students just enough education to get a job.
Students who enroll in CTE programs are said to be less able than their academic counterparts and that CTE pedagogy contributes to the decline of the civic and intellectual purpose of higher education. This criticism is in contrast to research that indicates CTE is a major contributor to positive economic growth, high-wage careers, and a steppingstone to additional education. This presentation will review a research study that examined the social stigmatization associated with community college CTE.
